Friday April 11th 2008 | New Europe Comment

The EU’s liberal party ELDR will today and tomorrow back Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen as their candidate for the presidency of either the European Council or the European Commission. This will happen at an ELDR Council meeting in Tallinn. Fogh has a good chance of becoming the ELDR’s official candidate for a top post. New Europe has monitored this case for a while and we are now ready with an overview.

The development points in the direction of continuingly greater influence for the political parties in the European Parliament. The ELDR are prepared for this development and tomorrow the party will have a Council meeting with the Lisbon Treaty’s new stipulations as the primary focus. The main speaker is Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

" In New Europe we have fought hard for an open and democratic election of the President of the European Commission. I have to say that I am very encouraged by what the ELDR are launching.
