The EU liberals line Fogh up as President.

The EU’s liberal party ELDR will today and tomorrow back Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen as their candidate for the presidency of either the European Council or the European Commission. This will happen at an ELDR Council meeting in Tallinn. Fogh has a good chance of becoming the ELDR’s official candidate for a top post. New Europe has monitored this case for a while and we are now ready with an overview.

EU against the death penalty – also in Iran

positive that the Slovenian EU presidency has just made a strong denouncement
of the Iranian government. The theme is the widespread use of the death penalty
that the country’s regime uses. One can obviously discuss what kind of impression denouncements
of this type make on those in power when they do not even have a problem with stoning!

Add European Citizen Package to New EU Agreement

“It was a good EU agreement the Danish parliament’s EU-positive parties composed in 2004. In 2008 the time is right to supplement the upcoming EU agreement with concrete initiatives. We must strengthen the joint European public and the cohesive force in the EU. We therefore propose a European Citizen Package with elements of education, culture and democracy” says New Europe’s president and member of the Danish parliament Steen Gade.

The Global Yes – to the Abolition of the Reservations

The four Danish reservations regarding the EMU, legal and internal affairs (RIA), defence, and union citizenship should be abolished. The latter reservation has in actuality abolished itself. That happened with the Amsterdam Treaty that explicitly emphasised that union citizenship does not take the place of national citizenships but instead complements these.
